What is titanium carbide?
The chemical formula titanium carbide, with a molecular weight of 59.89, is a gray metallic face-centered cubic lattice solid with a melting point of 3140 ± 90 , a boiling point of 4820 , and a relative density of 4.93. The hardness is greater than 9. It is insoluble in water, soluble in nitric acid, and aqua regia. It is stable in the air when it exceeds 800 , eroded by the air when it exceeds 2000 , and can react with pure O2 at 1150C. Preparation method: the mixture of titanium powder and carbon obtained by hydrogen reduction of TiO2 acts at high temperature or is mixed and pressed into a block by TiO2 and carbon powder. It is then heated to 2300-2700 in an electric furnace and carbonized in H2 or CO atmosphere. Purpose: to make cemented carbide, also used as an electrode and abrasive for arc lamps.
Preparation of titanium carbide
Chemical vapor deposition method: This synthesis method uses TiCl4, H2, and C reactions. The reactant reacts with the hot tungsten or carbon monofilament. TiC crystals grow directly on the monofilament. The production and sometimes even quality of TiC powder synthesized by this method are strictly limited. In addition, due to the strong corrosivity of TiCl4 and HCl in the product, special care should be taken during synthesis.

Still, the synthesis process is complex, and drying shrinkage is large.
