What is tantalum carbide?
Tantalum carbide has high hardness, high melting point, and good high-temperature performance and is mainly used as an additive for cemented carbide. Adding tantalum carbide can refine the grain of cemented carbide, which can significantly improve its thermal hardness, shock resistance, and oxidation resistance. For a long time, it depends on adding a single tantalum carbide to tungsten carbide (or tungsten carbide and titanium carbide), mixing with the binder metal cobalt, and forming; Sintering produces cemented carbide. To reduce the cost of cemented carbide, Ta-Nb composite carbide is often used. Currently, Ta-Nb composite is mainly used: TaC: NbC is 80:20 and 60:40, and the maximum NbC in the composite is 40% (generally considered not to exceed 20%).
Use of tantalum carbide
In recent years, transition metal carbides have attracted much attention due to their chemical stability, high hardness, strong oxidation and corrosion resistance, low resistance coefficient, and other advantages. Carbide nanomaterials have shown great application potential in metal coatings, tools, machine parts, composite materials, and other related fields. Among all carbide nanowire materials, silver carbide is one of the most popular materials; Tantalum carbide is one of the materials with the greatest potential. Tantalum carbide inherits many advantages of carbide nanomaterials and has unique aspects. For example, it has high hardness (Mohs hardness is 9-10 at room temperature, high melting point (about 3880 ), high Young's modulus (283-550GPa), and strong conductivity (conductivity is 32.7-117.4 at 25 ) μ Ω · cm), high-temperature superconductivity (10.5K), strong resistance to chemical corrosion and thermal shock, and high catalytic activity for ammonia decomposition and hydrogen separation. Currently, tantalum carbide powder and whisker tantalum carbide have been prepared using carbothermal reduction, thermal plasma, solvothermal, sol-gel, microwave heating, alkali reduction, self-propagating high-temperature synthesis, and high-frequency induction heating sintering.

Preparation of tantalum carbide
The preparation of TaC coating by CVD method needs to use the source material - TaCl5. TaCl5 to vaporize at 500K. The vaporized TaCl5 is poured into the CVD furnace as the gas source and deposited with other introduced reducing atmospheres to generate TaC. The process control is good when preparing TaC coating by a CVD process, and the coating composition and structure can be designed. However, the prepared coating is prone to crack due to the residual thermal stress.
Moreover, Ta2C is easily generated when depositing TaC, and the equipment performance requirements and maintenance are strict; the preparation cost is high. Hotwire CVD can also be used to prepare TaC coating. The Ta wire is heated to above 2000 , and the gas is activated for deposition. Due to the high melting point of Ta, the Ta wire does not deform during high-temperature deposition, and the deposition rate is high. In the H2-CH4 atmosphere, under 30 torr pressure φ 0.5mm, Ta wire is heated to 2500 for CVD.
