What is aluminium oxide?

Aluminium oxide is a stable oxide of aluminium with the chemical formula Al2O3. Aluminium oxide contains elemental aluminium and oxygen. If the bauxite raw materials are after chemical treatment, remove silicon, iron, titanium and other oxides and make the product is a high purity of alumina raw materials, Al2O3 content is generally above 99%. It is also known as bauxite in mining, the pottery industry and materials science. The white solid insoluble in water is odourless, tasteless, extremely hard, and easy to absorb but not a moisture solution (the burned one does not absorb moisture). Alumina is a typical amphoteric oxide (corundum is α -shaped and belongs to the densest accumulation, is an inert compound, slightly soluble in acid and alkali corrosion resistance [1]), can be soluble in inorganic acid and alkaline solutions, almost insoluble in water and non-polar organic solvents. If accidentally eating, easy to cause senile dementia and intellectual damage to children; if inhalation may cause irritation or lung injury.

Main uses of aluminium oxide

The crystal form of alumina is suitable for grinding materials and cutting tools; alumina powder is commonly used as a medium for colour layer analysis; corundum powder hardness can be used as abrasive, polishing powder, high-temperature sintering alumina, called artificial corundum or artificial gems, can make mechanical bearings or watch diamonds. Alumina is also used as high-temperature refractory materials, making refractory bricks, the crucible, porcelain, artificial gems, etc. Aluminium oxide is also the raw material of aluminium smelting. Corundum is a barrel or cone-shaped three-way crystal with a glass or diamond lustre. Insoluble in water, nor soluble in acids and bases. Thermostability. Colourless and transparent is called white jade; the red with trace trivalent chromium is called ruby; the blue with bivalent iron, trivalent iron or quadrivalent titanium is called sapphire; the dark grey and dark black with a small amount of trioxide are called corundum powder. It can be used as bearings for precision instruments, clock diamonds, grinding wheels, polishes, refractory materials and electric insulators. Colourful and usable for decorative gems. Artificial ruby single crystal can make the laser material. Except for natural minerals, aluminium hydroxide can be melted by hydrogen and oxygen flame; the main components of ruby and sapphire are alumina, with different colours and colours; sapphire is blue with iron oxide and titanium oxide; aluminium reacts with oxygen in the air to produce a dense layer of aluminium film covering the aluminium exposed in the air; aluminium is a good conductor of electricity and heat; aluminium can also be used as analytical reagent, dehydration, adsorbent, organic reaction catalyst, grinding agent, polishing agent, raw material for smelting aluminium, and refractory material.
