What is Titanium nitride?
Generally, TiN powder is yellowish brown, the ultrafine TiN powder is black, and TiN crystal is golden yellow. The melting point of TiN is 2950, the density is 5.43-5.44g/cm3, the Mohs hardness is 8-9, and the thermal shock resistance is good. The melting point of TiN is higher than that of most transition metal nitrides, but its density is lower than that of most metal nitrides. Therefore, TiN is a unique heat-resistant material. The crystal structure of TiN is similar to that of TiC, except that the C atom is replaced by the N atom.

Titanium nitride (TiN) has a typical NaCl-type structure, belonging to a face-centred cubic lattice, and its lattice constant is a=0.4241nm, in which titanium atoms are located at the corners of the face-centred cubic lattice. TiN is a non-stoichiometric compound, and its stable composition range is TiN0.37-TiN1.16 The nitrogen content can change in a certain range without causing the change of TiN structure.

Applications of Titanium nitride
Titanium nitride (TiN) is a fairly stable compound, which does not react with iron, chromium, calcium and magnesium at high temperatures, and TiN crucible does not react with acid slag and alkaline slag in CO and N2 atmosphere. Therefore, the TiN crucible is an excellent container for studying the interaction between molten steel and some elements. When TiN is heated in a vacuum, nitrogen is lost, and titanium nitride with low nitrogen content is produced.
TiN is a structural material with golden yellow colour, high melting point, high hardness, good chemical stability, little wetting with metal, high conductivity and superconductivity, and can be applied to high-temperature structural materials and superconducting materials.

Manufacturing method of Titanium nitride powder
1.Microwave carbothermal reduction is an oxidation-reduction reaction with inorganic carbon as a reducing agent at high temperatures. Liu Bingham and others in China used this method to prepare titanium nitride powder. The specific operation is as follows: using titanium oxide as raw material, heating carbon with a microwave until the temperature reaches 1200, and keeping the reduction reaction at this temperature for 1h to obtain titanium nitride powder. Compared with the conventional method, the purity of titanium nitride powder prepared by this method is higher, and it has the advantages of low synthesis temperature (100 ~ 200lower than that of the original method) and short cycle (1/15 of that of the conventional method).

2.The chemical vapour deposition method uses gaseous TiCl4 as raw material, H2 as a reducing agent to react with N2 to generate TiN, and the synthesis temperature is 1100~1500. This process is often used for coatings on the surfaces of metals and ceramics to enhance the hardness and wear resistance of ceramics and metals. This synthesized TiN has high purity, but low production efficiency and high cost. This process is a common method for coating TiN film on the surface of the metal, ceramic and other articles to make them beautiful.

3. The carbothermal reduction nitridation method of TiO _ 2 takes TiO _ 2 as raw material and carbonaceous graphite as a reducing agent, and reacts with N2 to generate TiN. The synthesis temperature is 1380~1800, and the reaction time is about 15h. In this reaction environment, carbon not only reacts with oxygen, but also reacts with titanium to form TiC, because the lattices of titanium carbide, titanium nitride and titanium oxide are very close, and they are easy to form a solid solution. Generally, the purity of TiN obtained by this method is not high, and the content of O and C is high. In order to obtain TiN with low O and C content, higher reaction temperature and longer reaction time are needed. In addition, some experts also adopt another method, that is, magnesium powder and titanium oxide are mixed and reacted in a certain proportion at low temperatures to prepare titanium nitride.
