Concrete is a kind of material widely used in modern buildings, which has the advantages of durability, plasticity, processability, and so on. However, ordinary concrete still has some deficiencies in some aspects, such as strength, durability, and so on, which limit the application of concrete in some fields.
In order to solve these problems, people began to study how to improve the performance of concrete by adding nano silica powder.

What is nanometer silicon dioxide?

Nanometer silica is a kind of material with unique properties, which has the characteristics of a large specific surface area, high reaction activity, good thermal stability, and so on.
Because of its special properties, nano-silica is widely used in material science, biomedicine, energy, and other fields.

Application of Nano-silica in concrete

The addition of nano-silica to concrete can improve the performance of concrete, such as improving strength, durability, reducing permeability, and so on.
The application of nano-silica in concrete will be introduced below.

1) Improve the strength of concrete.

The strength of concrete will be improved by adding nano-silica.
It is generally believed that this is due to the fact that nano-silica can fill the micropores in concrete, thus improving the compactness of concrete.
At the same time, nano-silica can also promote the hydration reaction of cement and form more hydration products, thus improving the strength of concrete.

2) Improve the durability of concrete.

The durability of concrete will be improved by adding nano-silica, which is because nano-silica can fill the micro-pores in concrete and prevent the infiltration of water and gas.
At the same time, nano-silica can also absorb harmful substances in concrete, such as chloride ions, thus reducing the corrosion of concrete.
  1. Reduce the permeability of concrete.
The addition of nano-silica can reduce the permeability of concrete because nano-silica can fill the micro-pores in concrete, thus reducing the infiltration of water and gas.
At the same time, nano-silica can promote the hydration reaction of cement and form more hydration products, thus blocking the micropores of concrete.

The principle of Nano-silica is to improve the strength of concrete

In terms of the gelation system:
  1. Nano-silica has good pozzolanic activity and reacts rapidly with cement hydration product calcium hydroxide at an early age to refine calcium hydroxide particles and improve the interfacial strength between cement slurry and aggregate. The hydrated calcium silicate gel with a low Si / Ca ratio has a higher cementing force and larger specific surface area, which improves the structure of the interface transition zone. At the same time, the reaction is an exothermic process. Further, promotes the hydration of cement.
  2. Nano-silica can physically fill the cementitious voids and capillary voids in concrete so as to improve the compactness and strength of concrete.
  3. The large specific surface area of nano-silica absorbs a large amount of surface water, which reduces the amount of water involved in hydration, thus reducing the degree of hydration of cement.
  4. Technical Parameter of Nano Silicon Dioxide Powder SiO2 Nanoparticles:

Item Number Appearance Particle Size (nm) Purity(%) Specific Surface Area(m2/g) PH Properties and Applications

Preparation method of Nano-silica in concrete.

Nano-silica can be prepared by sol-gel method, hydrothermal method, vapor deposition method, and so on.
Among them, the sol-gel method is the most commonly used preparation method at present.
The process is as follows:
1) Solution preparation: mixing ethyl silicate vinegar, ethanol, and deionized water to get a uniform solution.
2) Gel preparation: pour the solution into a container and place it in a constant temperature tank to make it naturally gelate.
3) Drying preparation: the gel was dried in the oven to get nano-silica.

Nano-silica is a kind of material with unique properties that will improve the performance of concrete, such as raising height, improving durability, reducing permeability, and so on.
The preparation methods of nano-silica in concrete include a sol-gel method, hydrothermal method, gas phase precipitation method, and so on.
Therefore, the addition of nano-silica in condensate 10 is a promising research direction.
