What is silicon powder?
Quartz powder is a powder that meets the requirements of use. It is processed from pure quartz (natural quartz or fused quartz) through crushing, sorting, cleaning, acid treatment, high-temperature melting, medium crushing, fine grinding, grading, iron removal, and other processes.
 
Production process
Ordinary quartz powder
Quartz powder is produced by the dry method and water method, with various conventional specifications: 100M, 150M, 200M, 325M, 400M, 600M, 1500M, and 2000M (M is mesh). In addition, special specifications can also be processed according to customer requirements. Generally, those requiring particle size distribution can also be processed.
 
The main equipment for producing quartz powder by dry method includes a stone chipper, crusher, vibrating screen, etc. The process flow is that the quartz ore is processed into smaller stones by a stone chipper, and the stones are processed into sand particles by a crusher and then screened by a vibrating screen. During the screening process, iron is removed using a magnet bar and a magnet discharge, sub-packed, and put into storage.
 
The main equipment for producing quartz powder by water method includes a stone chipper, stone mill, baking room, vibrating screen, water system, etc.
 
The water carries the sand into the sedimentation tank, and then the sand in the sedimentation tank is transported to the baking room to be baked into dry sand, then screened by a vibrating screen. During the screening process, iron is removed using a magnetic rod and a magnet discharge, and then the sub-loading is completed and put into storage.
 
The quartz powder produced by the dry method is divided into two grades: ordinary and refined. Because when the quartz ore is mined from the mountain, it has a yellowish-brown skin. The product of directly crushing and screening the small quartz ore is called ordinary quartz powder. The apparent appearance is yellow-brown and white. Its advantages are low prices, but its disadvantages are many impurities, so it is mostly used in the construction industry. The large ore is selected, and the yellow-brown skin on the surface is removed manually and then processed into refined quartz powder. It appears as a white, bright crystal, like white granulated sugar. Because the processing process takes time and materials, the price is high.
 
Refined superfine quartz powder
Quartz powder produced by the water method is divided into ordinary and refined quartz powder. The smaller quartz ore is processed into ordinary quartz powder, and the larger quartz ore is processed into refined quartz powder. Compared with dry method quartz powder, water method quartz powder has less equipment iron, and impurities washed away with water in the production process. For example, the iron content and impurities are less than dry method quartz powder, but its processing cost more labor and materials, so its price is higher.
 
Use of silica powder
Due to various advantages, silicon powder materials can also be widely used in epoxy plastic sealing materials, electrical insulation materials, adhesives, ceramics, coatings, fine chemicals, advanced building materials, and other fields, in addition to the field of copper-clad laminate.
 
Epoxy plastic packaging material is the key material used for packaging chips in electronic products, and the industry development keeps good consistency with integrated circuits. Due to the high cross-linking structure of pure epoxy resin, its brittleness, poor heat resistance, poor impact toughness, and other shortcomings, it is necessary to add fillers with heat resistance and strong curing effect, and silica powder is one of the commonly used fillers. At present, the main components of common epoxy molding materials are:
Filler (mainly silicon powder, accounting for 60%~90%).
Epoxy resin (less than 18%).
The curing agent (less than 9%).
Additives (about 3%).
 
The honeycomb ceramic carrier used for automobile exhaust purification and the cordierite material used for engine exhaust purification is made of aluminum oxide, silica powder, and other materials through mixing, extrusion, drying, sintering, and other processing. Spherical silica powder can improve honeycomb ceramic products' forming rate and stability.
 
Adhesives such as adhesive for wind turbine blades and similar large composite structural parts, building structural adhesive, etc., also use silicon powder as an important raw material, which makes the adhesive have appropriate viscosity, excellent thixotropy and sagging resistance, high adhesive strength, fatigue resistance, and other characteristics.
 
In other applications, because submicron spherical silicon powder is very suitable for reducing the viscosity of various resins and paints, improving the fluidity, and reducing the burr, it is widely used as a functional additive for promoting the fluidity of various resins for semiconductor packaging and reducing the burr, carbon powder additive, silicone rubber filler, sintering materials, and additives.
