Differences between hexagonal boron nitride and cubic boron nitride

Boron nitride ceramic is a kind of thermally and chemically stable refractories, which is composed of boron and nitrogen.
Boron nitride mainly exists in three crystal forms: hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), cubic boron nitride (c-BN) and wurtzite boron nitride (w-BN). H-BN is the most stable and soft form, and that is why it is used as a lubricant and additive in cosmetics. There are other forms of polymorphism that are less common, such as a-BN, t-BN, r-BN, m-BN, and o-BN.
 

Hexagonal boron nitride
Hexagonal boron nitride is synthesized by nitridation or ammonolysis of boron oxide at extremely high temperatures. Hexagonal BN has a microstructure similar to that of graphite. The lamellar microstructure and layered lattice structure make it a good lubricating material. It is resistant to sintering and is mostly formed by hot pressing.
 
Structurally, h-BN is a white, greasy powder; it is similar to graphite in another way. H-BN crystal structure is hexagonal and the BN molecule is partially ionic, which reduces the electrical conductivity. Both h-BN and c-BN showed high chemical and thermal stability. However, h-BN is more stable than c-BN and does not deteriorate even at temperatures up to 1000°C (in air), 1400°C (in vacuum) and 2850°C (in inert atmosphere). Therefore, h-BN thermal conductivity is close to graphene, which is why it is considered to be one of the most advanced ceramic materials today.
 
Under hot pressing condition, h-BN can be easily machined using traditional metal cutting technology. Other key features of h-BN include high dielectric breakdown strength, high volume resistivity and excellent chemical inertia.
 
What is h-BN used for?
BN is used as a substrate material for graphene electronic products. It is used to make dielectrics for the next generation of nano electronic devices.
It is used as a high quality and low permittivity railing material for two-dimensional rampant vertical electron tunneling devices.
Thin h-BN is used for corrosion and oxidation protection coatings.
H-BN is effectively used for gas sensing. The material is an essential substance for sensing gases such as ammonia and ethanol.
 

Cubic boron nitride
C-BN is the second hard material known, second only to diamond. The material is made from hexagonal BN under high pressure and high temperature. Although h-BN is similar to granite, c-BN is similar to diamond (another allotrope of carbon) and behaves similarly. The characteristics of cubic boron nitride reflect the characteristics of diamond. In the past few decades, there has been a surge in the application of cubic boron nitride, resulting in an increase in commercial production of C-BN.
 
In terms of hardness, c-BN is harder than traditional grinding materials such as Al2O3, SiC and boron carbide. This means that the output performance of grinding with c-BN grinding wheel is better than that obtained with traditional abrasive grinding wheel.
 
What is c-BN used for?
For cutting tools, c-BN is used as sintering c-BN.
Cubic boron nitride is used as insulating material in electronic products. C-BN is a kind of III-V semiconductor compound. It has a wide band gap, which makes it an excellent insulator.
C-BN is also known for its excellent wear resistance and inertia for chemical reactions with other reactive materials.
C-BN is now also used to develop protective coatings because of its high hardness and excellent wear resistance.
The chemical inertia of boron nitride usually makes it suitable to be used as a protective lining for thermocouple jackets, crucibles and reaction vessels.
