What are the applications of alkyl glycosides?

Alkyl glycosides are alkyl polyglucosides(APG ) synthesized from glucose and fatty alcohols. They refer to glycosides with more than or equal to 2 sugar units in complex glycoside compounds. They are collectively called alkyl polyglucosides. Generally, the degree of polymerization n of alkyl polyglycosides is 1.1 to 3, and R is a C8 to C16 alkyl group. APG appears as a white solid powder or light yellow oily liquid at room temperature. It has high solubility in water and is difficult to dissolve in commonly used organic solvents.
Compared with other surfactants, alkyl glycosides have the advantages of good compatibility, low skin irritation, low toxicity, and good biodegradability. Alkyl glycosides are synthesized using starch as the primary raw material. Not only is it low in cost, it is also pollution-free and meets modern environmental protection requirements.
Advantages of alkyl glycosides
1. It has high surface activity , substantial wetting and decontamination ability, and rich, delicate and stable foam. It shows an apparent synergistic effect when combined with other surfactants and has excellent compatibility.
2. It still has a high solubility in highly concentrated acid, alkali and salt solutions and has no cloud point or gelling phenomenon.
3. It has low toxicity, minor irritation to the skin, and is entirely biodegradable, conforming to the concept of environmental protection.
4. It is a renewable resource that can make up for the shortage of natural oil resources and solve various disadvantages caused by the increasing depletion of petroleum resources.
Properties of alkyl glycosides
1. Physical properties
Pure alkyl polyglycosides are generally white powders, similar to glass bodies with no clear melting point. They have a wide melting range from softening to flow points. For alkyl monoglycosides, the softening point increases with the length of the alkyl chain. The alkyl polyglycosides obtained from industrial production are all mixtures and can be divided into light-colored, light-yellow or brown hygroscopic solids according to different refining conditions.
2. Solubility
APG has excellent solubility, stability and surface activity in acid solution. Its solubility and surface activity in alkali solutions are much better than other nonionic surfactants.
Uses of alkyl glycosides
1. Washing and cleaning
Traditional kitchen detergents use LAS/AEO as the main ingredients. Due to their poor solubility, foaming and mildness, more toxic co-solvents (alkyl amine oxides, etc.) must be added to improve performance. APG has good solubility, mildness, foaming power and degreasing properties and has excellent synergistic effects with LAS.
2. Cosmetics
The requirements for the entire system of surfactants in cosmetics include:
  1. Good biodegradability.
  2. Low toxicity to aquatic organisms.
  3. Good compatibility with skin and mucous membranes.
  4. Low irritation to eye mucous membranes.
  5. No allergic and allergen reactions.
  6. Side effects.
The products are low in toxic substances; they have renewable raw materials and no preservatives. Dermatology and toxicology tests have proven that APG has extremely low irritation to the epidermis, mucous membranes and living cells, making it suitable for cosmetic formulations.
APG has many advantages when used as a surfactant component in cream skin care products. In addition to its excellent emulsifying properties, it also has the functions of moisturizing, moisturizing, softening and moisturizing the skin. APG can also be made into a stable dispersion with wax or certain esters and can be used as the pearlescent component of cream and the preparation of pearlescent shampoo at room temperature.
3. Agriculture
APG can be used as a pesticide emulsifier, dispersant, pesticide and herbicide synergist in agricultural chemicals. It can also be used as an anti-fogging agent for agricultural films. It is easy to degrade, does not pollute crops and land, and has good hygroscopicity. Features. In addition, APG has excellent wetting and penetrating power, which is very beneficial for formulating dry pesticide ingredients into aqueous pesticides and agricultural chemicals and promoting spreading and absorption on the surface of plants.
4. Bioindustry
APG has the characteristics of non-denaturation of proteins and high ultraviolet light penetration, so it is used to solubilize membrane proteins, refine reconstructed enzymes, rhodopsin and fatty acids, and stabilize these proteins.
Although APG is a stable compound, the remaining three hydroxyl groups on the sugar moiety can further synthesize various esters and other ether derivatives. In addition, APG can also synthesize alkoxy compounds and quaternary ammonium salt cations, etc., and their application fields need to be further developed and researched.
