What is graphene aerogel?

What is graphene aerogel?
Graphene aerogel is a macroscopic solid material with a three-dimensional porous network structure formed by graphene as the basic building block, assembled and lapped by a special process. It combines the unique two-dimensional carbon nanomaterial properties of graphene and the lightweight and high porosity characteristics of aerogel, presenting a series of excellent physicochemical properties. This material not only inherits all the structural properties of aerogel, such as low density, high specific surface area, and high porosity, but also exhibits unique properties, such as ultra-high-pressure retraction elasticity, excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, good environmental stability, and hydrophobicity, which are inherent in graphene.
Structure and composition of graphene aerogel:
Graphene Layer: Graphene is a hexagonal lattice structure formed by a single layer of carbon atoms in sp2 hybridized orbitals with extremely high strength, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and flexibility.
Porous network: Graphene aerogel has a large number of pores inside, which are interconnected by graphene sheets to form a three-dimensional open structure. The pores are filled with air, which endows it with extremely low density and high specific surface area.

Physical properties of graphene aerogel:
Ultra-low density: Graphene aerogel is one of the lightest known solid materials, with a density typically well below 1 g/cm3 and can even reach 0.16 mg/cm3, lighter than helium.
High elasticity and recovery: Even after significant compression (e.g., up to 80%), it can still recover its original shape, showing excellent elastic properties.
Strong adsorption capacity: With an extremely high specific surface area and rich pore structure, it has an ultra-fast and ultra-high adsorption capacity for organic solvents, especially oils. It can absorb liquids hundreds or even thousands of times its own weight. It only absorbs oil but not water, which is suitable for dealing with environmental pollution problems such as the leakage of crude oil at sea.

Thermal properties of graphene aerogel:
Thermal insulation properties: As its main body consists of air-filled pores, graphene aerogel is a highly efficient thermal insulation material with extremely low thermal conductivity, making it suitable for thermal insulation and heat preservation applications.
Phase Change Material Composite: By compositing with phase change materials, the graphene aerogel skeleton can significantly increase the thermal conductivity of the composite material, which helps in thermal management applications.

Electrical and mechanical properties of graphene aerogel:
Electrical conductivity: thanks to the excellent electrical properties of graphene, graphene aerogel can maintain a high electrical conductivity under proper design, which is suitable for electrochemical energy storage, sensors, and other fields.
Mechanical strength: despite being extremely lightweight, graphene aerogel can still exhibit a certain mechanical strength, but the exact strength depends on its preparation method and microstructure.
Application prospects of graphene aerogel:
In terms of application fields, graphene aerogel also shows its unique value. It can be used as a thermal barrier coating for high-temperature structural materials, which protects the structural materials in high-temperature environments due to its excellent thermal insulation properties. At the same time, it can also be used as a base material for nanocomposites to improve the mechanical properties of composite materials. In the field of energy storage, graphene aerogel can be used as an electrode material for devices such as capacitors and lithium-ion batteries, which helps to increase the energy storage density of the electrode material due to its high conductivity and large specific surface area properties. In addition, it can be used in the preparation of oil-water separation materials and play an important role in gas separation and gas purification.
Environmental remediation: It is used for the adsorption and recovery of oil and pollutants, such as for treating offshore oil spills.
Energy storage and conversion: as electrode materials, supercapacitor electrodes, or battery components, utilizing their high specific surface area and conductivity.
Thermal management: as highly efficient insulation materials or in combination with phase change materials for heat storage and release.
Aerospace: Suitable for manufacturing lightweight aerospace components due to its lightweight, high-strength, and high-temperature-resistant properties.
Adsorption and separation technology plays a role in gas separation, water purification, and other fields.
Overall, graphene aerogel is a new type of material with superior performance, a wide range of applications, and great potential for development. With in-depth research and technological progress, it will have more application scenarios and possibilities in the future.
