Is cuprous oxide a toxic substance?
What is Cuprous oxide?
Cuprous oxide is a red or dark red octahedral cubic crystalline powder. The relative density is 6.0. The melting point is 1235℃. Loss of oxygen at 1800℃. Insoluble in water and alcohol, soluble in hydrochloric acid, ammonium chloride, and ammonia water, and slightly soluble in nitric acid. Dissolved in hydrochloric acid to produce white cuprous chloride crystalline powder. Meet dilute sulfuric acid and dilute nitric acid to form copper salt. It will turn blue quickly in the air. Soluble in concentrated alkali, ferric chloride, and other solutions. Gradually oxidized into black copper oxide in wet air. Applications of Cuprous oxide powder
Used to make antifouling paint for ship bottom (used to kill low-level marine animals), pesticides, various copper salts, analytical reagents, and red glass. It is also used for rectification electroplating in the electrical appliance industry. It is also used as a colorant for ceramics and enamels.
Preparation method of cuprous oxide powder
1.Dry method: After removing impurities, copper powder is mixed with copper oxide and then sent into a calciner to be heated to 800 ~ 900℃ to be calcined into cuprous oxide. After taking it out, the mechanical impurities are absorbed by a magnet and then crushed to 325 meshes to obtain the finished cuprous oxide product. If copper sulfate is used as raw material, the copper in copper sulfate will be reduced by the iron first, and the subsequent reaction steps will be the same as those of using copper powder as raw material.
2.Glucose reduction method; The copper sulfate solution is mixed with glucose and then added with sodium hydroxide solution for reaction to generate cuprous oxide, which is filtered, rinsed, dried, and crushed to obtain cuprous oxide products.
3.Electrolysis method: in an electrolytic cell with an iron shell lined with PVC, a cast copper plate is used as an anode, a purple copper plate is used as the cathode, potassium chromate is used as an additive, and salt solution is used as an electrolyte, which contains 290 ~ 310g/L sodium chloride, 0.3 ~ 0.5g/L potassium chromate, 70 ~ 90℃, pH value 8 ~ 12 and current density 1500A/m2.
Safety of cuprous oxide powder
Cuprous oxide is toxic. Cuprous oxide is an oxide of univalent copper. It is a bright red powdery solid, almost insoluble in water. It disproportionates into bivalent copper and simple copper in an acidic solution and gradually oxidizes into black copper oxide in wet air.
Storage protection: Packed in iron drums lined with polyethylene plastic bags, with a net weight of 25kg or 50kg per drum. There should be a "highly toxic" sign. It's poison. Hazardous gauge number: refer to GB 6.1 class 61519. UN NO.2765, 3010 and 2766; IMDE CODE 6221, 3270, 6220, 6219 pages, class 6.1. Store in a dry and well-ventilated warehouse, and do not mix with oxidant. The container must be sealed to prevent it from being oxidized into copper oxide in contact with the air, thus reducing its use value. It cannot be stored and transported together with strong acids, strong alkali, and edible articles. Handle with care when loading and unloading to prevent the packaging from being damaged. In case of fire, water, sand, and various fire extinguishers can be used to put out the fire.
Toxicity protection: When the dust content of this product reaches 0. 22 ~ 14 mg/m3 in the air, it will cause acute poisoning after working for 1 ~ 2 hours, which is characterized by headache, weakness, redness of pharynx and conjunctiva, nausea, muscle pain, sometimes vomiting and diarrhea, fatigue, and elevated body temperature. After one day, the body temperature can return to normal, but it is still weak, with headache, dizziness, rapid pulse number, and increased lymphocytes. Chronic poisoning shows that the local skin, hair, and conjunctiva of workers exposed to copper compounds sometimes turn pale yellow-green or black-green, and the gums have dark red or crimson edges. It can irritate the skin, and dust can irritate the eyes and cause corneal ulcers. For acute poisoning patients, gastric lavage with a certain concentration of K4[Fe(CN)6] solution, taking milk, and other measures. The maximum allowable concentration in the air is 0. 1mg/m3. Wear masks, dustproof glasses, and protective overalls, and take a shower after work.
