What is Zin Sulfide?
Zinc sulfide is stable in dry air, long placed in wet air or containing water, and gradually oxidation into zinc sulfate. Dissolve in dilute inorganic acid, soluble in alkali, and insoluble in water. But burning in H2S gas is converted into crystals. The α variant is a colorless hexagonal crystal with a density of 3.98 g/cm3 and a melting point of 1700℃; the β variant is a colorless cubic crystal with a density of 4.102 g/cm3 and converted to α at 1020℃. Change to zinc sulfate in long-standing moist air, generally from the action of hydrogen sulfide and zinc salt solution. If a trace amount of Cu, Mn, and Ag is added to the crystal ZnS as the activator, different colors can be emitted after illumination. Zinc sulfide is slightly harmful to water, does not contact undiluted or large products with groundwater, waterways, or sewage system, and does not discharge materials into the surrounding environment without government permission.
Main uses of Zin Sulfide
Zinc sulfide is widely used in the production of the infrared window, fairing, and infrared optical elements, with high purity, insoluble in water, moderate density, and easy to process; zinc sulfide has good refractive index uniformity and consistency, 8-12 μ m band range, with good image transmission performance, but after 10um some absorption. In the middle infrared band, with the shorter wavelength, the absorption and scattering are enhanced; zinc sulfide is resistant to the harsh environment, and its high hardness and fracture strength are twice that of zinc selenium; zinc sulfide can also be used as an analytical reagent, fluorophor, and photoconductor material. Also used in manufacturing dyes, coatings, pigments, glass, curing oil, etc., as well as as filters and laser window coating.
