What is Nickel Titanium?
An equiatomic alloy of nickel and titanium, known as nitinol, possesses many interesting properties, such as superelasticity, pseudoelasticity, shape memory, good corrosion resistance and satisfactory biocompatibility. Therefore, it is used in many branches, for example, for fabricating surgical implants. Due to the disadvantages of commonly used manufacturing methods, there is a search for their alternatives. Powder metallurgy can be one of them. In this work, the influence of particle size of initial powders on the composition and properties of samples, which were prepared by a thermal explosion mode of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (TE – SHS) powder metallurgy technique, was studied.
There are some difficulties to produce the NiTi powders
There are some difficulties in producing NiTi powders. The first step in our project is to demonstrate that the powder can be produced from the plasma rotating electrode process. An electric arc melted the Nitinol rod as an electrode and then became metal drops on the influence of the centrifugal force. The nitinol drops were formed at the edge of the electrode. The NiTi powder, after cooling, was entirely spherical and possessed a smooth surface due to the surface tension. Summarizes the chemical composition from the electrode with two different sizes of powder. The chemical composition analysis showed that the electrode components compared with powder have no obvious difference. The bulk of the produced particles were sieved in three sizes in the diameter range of 500 μm, 300500 μm, and 300 μm. The size of over 500 μm powder shows a flat shape. The flat shape may be formed by colliding with the chamber wall before being solidification at the beginning of the processing. The morphology of different size from 100 to 300 μm shown in Fig. 1B. They are nearly spherical and possesses smooth surface without small adhering satellites under the size of 300 μm.

The NiTi powders were manufactured from PREP process
The NiTi powders were manufactured from the PREP process. However, the element composition is important to verify to prove the manufacturing method can deal with the NiTi alloy with stable yield and quality. The XRD was performed to assay the different powder sizes with or without the same crystal structure. The XRD data showed that the powders were the single phase contained only NiTi phase without macro segregation. The left panel is a size smaller than 300 μm, and the left panel is a size more than 500 μm). The EDS assay was performed to confirm the composition of elements. The powders with sizes from 300–150 μm were used to apply in the EDS experiment. The EDS analysis with region mapping data showed the 300–150 μm powder with the Ni and Ti peaks. The point of EDS spectra also indicated the same results with region mapping. The powder diameter size can be influenced by electrode diameter and rotation speed. The ASM handbook has demonstrated that any kind of alloy with a rotating electrode process can use the formula to estimate the particle diameter. The equation is listed below it.
