What is 3D Printing Metal Powder?
SLM and DMLS used in industrial applications to create end use engineering products. In this article, we use the term metal 3D printing to refer to both processes in general, and we describe the basic mechanisms of the fabrication process that are necessary for engineers and designers to understand the benefits and limitations of the technology. Other additive manufacturing processes, such as Electron Beam Melting (EBM) and Ultrasonic Additive Manufacturing (UAM), can produce dense metal parts. Their availability and applications are limited so they won't be presented here. The differences between SLM and DMLS come down the fundamentals of the particle bonding process.
Hot Isostatic Pressing and Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing)
Under typical pressures from 400 to 2,070 bar and temperatures up to 2,000°C, HIP can achieve 100% of maximum theoretical density and improve critical, high-performance materials' flexibility and fatigue resistance. The components from 3D Printing, regardless of method (EBM, SLM, etc.), benefits greatly from Hot Isostatic Pressing. Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP: ing) has been used successfully by worldwide manufacturers. HIP: ing is used to eliminate pores and remove defects, i.e., nitrides, oxides, and carbides, to dramatically increase the material properties. Additive Manufacturing, and known as 3D Printing, is rapidly taking hold in demanding markets such as aerospace and medical implants. Hot Isostatic Pressing and Heat Treatment combined eliminate pores and thus increase the flexibility and fatigue resistance of parts which are often safety and quality critical. The aerospace industry plans to use additive manufacturing to mass-produce critical metal alloy parts.、

How does metal 3D printing work?
The basic fabrication process is similar for both SLM and DMLS. Here's how it works: The build chamber is first filled with inert gas to minimize the oxidation of metal powder, and then it is heated to the optimal build temperature. A thin layer of metal powder is spread over the build platform, so a high-power laser scans the cross-section of the component, melting the metal particles together. A high-power laser scans the cross-section of the component, melt the metal particles together. The entire area of the model is scanned, then the part is built fully solid. When the scanning process is completed, the build platform moves downwards by a layer thickness, and the recoater spreads other thin layer of metal powder. This process is repeated until the whole part is complete.
