What is aluminum oxide carrier?

Aluminum oxide carrier refers to white powder or molded Aluminum oxide solid, which is the most widely used catalyst carrier, accounting for about 70% of industrial supported catalysts. Aluminum oxide has many forms, not only different forms have different properties, but even the same form has different properties because of its different sources, such as density, pore structure, specific surface area and so on.
 
These properties are of great significance for aluminum oxide used as catalyst carrier. Aluminum oxide is mostly prepared from its hydroxide (also known as Aluminum oxide hydrate or aluminum oxide hydrate).
 

Aluminum oxide carrier shapes

Commercial aluminum oxide carriers are powdered, but most of them are molded. Strip, spherical and ingot-shaped aluminum oxide are mostly used as catalyst carriers in fixed-bed reactors, while microspherical aluminum oxide carriers are mostly used in fluidized bed reactors. It can also be made into special-shaped carriers for specific catalytic processes, such as ring, trefoil, honeycomb, fiber (see aluminum oxide fiber), etc. In addition to solids, aluminum oxide sol is available for sale. The important parameters for selecting aluminum oxide are crystal form, purity, specific surface area, pore structure, bulk density and so on. The specific surface area of α-aluminum oxide is very low (less than 1m2/g), and the specific surface area of transition aluminum oxide is generally up to 10~102m2/g.

Most of the formed commercial aluminum oxide carriers are porous materials, and the pore size and its distribution have an important influence on the diffusion properties of reactants in the catalyst particles in the catalytic process. The pore size of fine pores can be less than 20 μ m, while that of coarse pores can reach micron level. The pore structure varies with species. All transition aluminum oxide contains water more or less, and there are some hydroxyl groups and exposed aluminum atoms on the surface, which shows the characteristics of B acid and L acid (see acid-base catalyst), which has an important influence on the properties of Aluminum oxide carrier. The surface acidity is related to the preparation conditions, especially to the impurity ions and heat treatment temperature. Negative ions such as halogen will enhance the surface acidity of aluminum oxide, which will promote the catalytic function of aluminum oxide itself for hydrocarbon cracking and isomerization.

Aluminum oxide with small specific surface area (or materials with only a small number of coarse pores) is usually used to support catalyst active components with high specific activity. The diffusion effect in pores can be eliminated by using this kind of carrier, and the deep oxidation side reaction can be reduced in the process for the purpose of selective oxidation. For example, the silver catalyst for the oxidation of ethylene to ethylene oxide is supported by α-aluminum oxide. Aluminum oxide with large specific surface area has a well-developed pore structure, which can highly disperse the active components of the catalyst into particles, and with the barrier effect of the carrier, the active component particles can be prevented from sintering and growing up in the process of use. it is a kind of widely used aluminum oxide carrier. For example, the precious metals platinum, rhodium and so on are dispersed on aluminum oxide support to make hydrogenation catalyst, which can improve the utilization of precious metals.
 
The surface acidity of aluminum oxide and the active components loaded form bifunctional catalysts. For example, the platinum-aluminum oxide catalyst used in platinum reforming, in which aluminum oxide is not only a carrier, but also one of the active components of the catalyst.
