How is Sodium thiosulfate made?
What is Sodium thiosulfate?
Sodium thiosulfate, also known as sodium bicarbonate and hypo (from its alias sodium hyposulfite), is a common thiosulfate with the chemical formula Na₂S₂O₃ and a molecular weight of 158.108. Sodium thiosulfate is colorless, transparent crystals or fine crystalline particles; Odorless and salty; Weathering in dry air and deliquescence in wet air; Soluble in water, the aqueous solution shows weak alkaline reaction; React with strong acid to produce elemental sulfur and sulfur dioxide gas. With the participation of thiocyanate, it can combine with cyanide ions free in vivo or combined with methemoglobin to form nontoxic thiocyanate, which is excreted in urine to solve cyanide poisoning. In addition, it can combine with various metal ions to form nontoxic sulfide, which is excreted by the urine and also has a desensitization effect. Clinically, it is used to treat cyanide and nitrile poisoning, arsenic, bismuth, iodine, mercury, and lead poisoning, as well as skin pruritus, chronic dermatitis, chronic urticaria, drug eruption, scabies, and tinea. The chemical formula is Na₂S₂O₃.

Synthetic method of Sodium thiosulfate
There are many synthetic methods of sodium thiosulfate, such as the sodium sulfite method and alkali sulfide method.
1. Sodium sulfite process: sodium carbonate solution reacts with sulfur dioxide gas, adding caustic soda for neutralization, adding caustic soda to remove impurities, filtering, dissolving the sulfur powder in hot sodium sulfite solution for reaction, filtering, removing impurities, filtering, adding caustic soda for alkali treatment, concentrating, filtering, crystallizing, centrifugal dehydration and screening to obtain the finished product of sodium thiosulfate.
2. Alkali sulfide method: the raw material solution prepared from evaporation residue of alkali sulfide and barium sulfide wastewater (containing sodium carbonate and sodium sulfide) reacts with sulfur dioxide, and after clarification, the sulfur powder is added for heating reaction, and after evaporation, cooling crystallization, washing, separation, and screening, the finished product of sodium thiosulfate is obtained.
3. The raw material for preparing anhydrous sodium thiosulfate is sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate. The pure sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate crystals are heated to completely dissolve in their own crystallization water and heated and concentrated below 100℃ until a large number of anhydrous crystals are precipitated, the crystals are separated and dried below 100℃.
4. Dehydration method is adopted: the crystallization of sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate is indirectly heated by steam so that it is dissolved in its own crystallization water, and the anhydrous sodium thiosulfate product is prepared through concentration, centrifugal dehydration, drying, and screening.
5. Comprehensive method: The main components are sodium sulfide, sodium sulfite, sulfur, and a small amount of sodium hydroxide. After vacuum evaporation, decolorization by activated carbon, filter pressing, cooling, crystallization, centrifugal dehydration, and screening, the finished product is obtained.
6. Sodium sulfate neutralization method: the main components are sodium sulfide and a small amount of sodium carbonate waste.
Price of Sodium thiosulfate
Sodium thiosulfate particle size and purity will affect the product's price, and the purchase volume can also affect the cost of Sodium thiosulfate. A large amount of large amount will be lower. The price of Sodium thiosulfate can be found on our company's official website.
