How is Zirconium Oxide made?

What is Zirconium Oxide?
Zirconia, with a chemical formula of ZrO2 _ 2, is the main oxide of zirconium. It is usually a white, odorless, and tasteless crystal, which is hardly soluble in water, hydrochloric acid, and dilute sulfuric acid. Its chemical properties are inactive, and it has the properties of high melting point, high resistivity, high refractive index, and low thermal expansion coefficient, which makes it an important high-temperature resistant material, ceramic insulating material, and ceramic opacifier, and also the main raw material for artificial drilling.
More about Zirconium Oxide:

Appearance: white, odorless, and tasteless crystal
Synthesis method of Zirconium Oxide Powder
The stabilized zirconia of industrial refractories is mostly prepared by electrofusion. Carbon and stabilizer calcium oxide is added in the electric melting process of zircon, while silicon is removed, zirconia and calcium oxide react to form a solid solution, and then the stabilized zirconia can be prepared by crushing and grading. Stable and partially stable zirconia used in fine ceramics is generally prepared by the wet method. At present, the most mature and commonly used method is neutralization precipitation, and its preparation process is shown in the figure. Dissolve the purified zirconium oxychloride with pure water, filter to remove insoluble substances, adjust the concentration of zirconium in the solution, add the required amount of yttrium chloride solution (or chloride solution of other rare earth metals or alkaline earth metals), add ammonia water and precipitate. The precipitate was washed with hot water, then filtered, dried, and calcined. Ultrafine-stabilized zirconia powder can be obtained by grinding the calcined product.
Partially stabilized zirconia is prepared by controlling the amount of stabilizer added to make it insufficient to achieve complete stability. Partially stabilized zirconia has high strength and thermal shock resistance and is widely used in structural ceramics.
Uses of Zirconium Oxide Powder
  1. fireproofing
Zirconia fiber is a polycrystalline refractory fiber material. Because of the high melting point, non-oxidation, and other excellent high-temperature characteristics of ZrO2, ZrO2 fiber has a higher service temperature than other refractory fiber varieties, such as alumina fiber, mullite fiber, and aluminum silicate fiber. Zirconia fiber has been used for a long time in the ultra-high temperature oxidation atmosphere above 1500, and the highest use temperature is as high as 2200. Even at 2500, it can still maintain the complete fiber shape, and its high-temperature chemical properties are stable, corrosion-resistant, oxidation-resistant, thermal shock-resistant, non-volatile and pollution-free. It is the top-notch refractory fiber material in the world at present. The acid and alkali corrosion resistance of ZrO2 _ 2 is much stronger than that of SiO2 _ 2 and Al2O3. Insoluble in water, soluble in sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid, and Slightly soluble in hydrochloric acid and nitric acid. It can be co-melted with alkali to form zirconate.
  1. combustion gas turbine
The application of plasma-sprayed zirconia thermal barrier coating in aviation and industrial gas turbines has made great progress, and it has been used in the turbine part of gas turbines to a certain extent. Because this coating can reduce the temperature of air-cooled high-temperature components by 50~200, it can significantly improve the durability of high-temperature components or allow to increase in the gas temperature or reduce the required amount of cooling gas while keeping the temperature of high-temperature components unchanged, thus improving the efficiency of the engine.
  1. ceramic material
Zirconia is used as raw material in the kiln industry because of its high refractive index, high melting point, and strong corrosion resistance. Piezoelectric ceramic products include filters, speakers, ultrasonic underwater acoustic detectors, and so on. There are also daily-use ceramics (industrial ceramic glaze powder), zirconium bricks, and zirconium pipes for precious smelting metals. Nano-zirconia can also be used as a matrix material for polishing agents, abrasive particles, piezoelectric ceramics, precision ceramics, ceramic glazes, and high-temperature pigments.
  1. Other fields
In addition, zirconia can be used to manufacture incandescent gas lampshades, enamels, white glass, refractory crucibles, etc. X-ray photography. Abrasive material. Together with yttrium, it is used to manufacture light source lamps, thick film circuit capacitor materials, and piezoelectric crystal transducers in infrared spectrometers.
