The synthesis of zirconium nitride powder mainly includes direct nitridation of Zr metal with nitrogen, high-energy reactive ball milling (RBM, microwave plasma method, benzene thermal method, aluminum reduction nitridation, magnesium thermal reduction, carbothermal reduction nitridation ( CRN), etc.


1. Direct nitriding of metallic zirconium and nitrogen at a temperature of 1100~1200°C.

2. Using the zirconium tetrachloride method. The reaction formula follows: using zirconium tetrachloride and ammonia as raw materials to prepare zirconium nitride. 

  3ZrCl4 + 4NH3→Zr3N4 + 12HCl

  2Zr3N4→6ZrN + N2


Zirconium tetrachloride first forms an adduct with ammonia, and then it is heated to 750°C to be converted into zirconium tetranitride (Zr3N4) and further heated to 1200°C to be converted into zirconium nitride (ZrN). In the presence of sulfuric acid, ammonia reacts above 1000°C to produce zirconium nitride.
