Description
Tungsten Oxide WO3 Powder Properties
What is Tungsten Oxide WO3 Powder ?

Tungsten oxide or trioxide is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula WO3, yellow powder. It is obtained by adding acid after ore and soda ash fusion.

Tungsten trioxide is a light yellow orthorhombic crystalline powder. The color changes from lighter to darker when heated. The specific gravity is 7.16 g/cm3, the melting point is 1473°C, and the boiling point is 1750°C. It sublimates significantly at 850°C and turns green when melted. It is stable in the air, insoluble in water and inorganic acids except for hydrofluoric acid, and can be slowly dissolved in ammonia water and concentrated sodium hydroxide solution.

Tungsten(VI) oxide, also known as tungsten trioxide or tungstic anhydride, WO3, is a chemical compound containing oxygen and the transition metal tungsten. It is obtained as an intermediate in the recovery of tungsten from its minerals. Tungsten ores are treated with alkalis to produce WO3. Further reaction with carbon or hydrogen gas reduces tungsten trioxide to pure metal.

Tungsten(VI) oxide occurs naturally in the form of hydrates, which include minerals tungstite WO3·H2O, meymacite WO3·2H2O, and hydrotungstite (of the same composition as meymacite, however sometimes written as H2WO4). These minerals are rare to very rare secondary tungsten minerals.

The crystal structure of tungsten trioxide is temperature-dependent. It is tetragonal at temperatures above 740°C, orthorhombic from 330 to 740°C, monoclinic from 17 to 330°C, triclinic from -50 to 17°C, and monoclinic again at temperatures below -50 °C. The most common structure of WO3 is monoclinic with space group P21/n.

Tungsten trioxide is a strong oxidizing agent: it reacts with rare-earth elements, iron, copper, aluminum, manganese, zinc, chromium, molybdenum, carbon, hydrogen, and silver, being reduced to a pure tungsten metal. Reaction with gold and platinum reduces it to dioxide.

How is Tungsten Oxide WO3 Powder produced?
Acid-base two-step method:
The acid-base two-step process is one of the most commonly used methods to prepare tungsten oxide. The method is to mix sodium tungstate solution with dilute hydrochloric acid and nitric acid, add ammonia water to adjust the pH value, generate ammonium tungstate solution, and then evaporate and concentrate it, add anhydrous ethanol or acetone sedimentation to obtain tungsten oxide precipitates of different crystal types. The advantage of the acid-base two-step method is that it can obtain different crystal types of tungsten oxide, but the disadvantage is that it needs to use a lot of acid-base reagents, and the production cost is high.
Sodium carbonate method:
The sodium carbonate process is a method for preparing tungate. The method is to mix sodium tungsten solution with sodium carbonate solution, heating and concentrating, adding anhydrous ethanol or acetone sedimentation to obtain tungsten residue, and then an oxidation reaction at a certain temperature to produce tungsten oxide. The benefit of using sodium carbonate is that it simplifies the manufacturing process and lowers the cost of production. Still, the product quality is not as good as the acid-base two-step method.
Ion exchange method:
The ion exchange method is a method for preparing high-purity tungsten oxide. The method is to place the ion exchange resin in sodium tungsten solution, absorb tungsten ions through the resin, and then elute the absorbed tungsten ions with dilute nitric acid to obtain high-purity tungsten oxide. This method is a good choice because of its easy operation and low cost. Still, the disadvantage is that it needs to use a lot of ion exchange resin and dilute nitric acid reagent.
Chemical vapor deposition method:
The chemical vapor deposition method deposits gaseous tungsten compounds on the substrate to form tungsten oxide thin films at high temperatures. This method has the advantages of high product purity and adjustable film thickness, but it needs special equipment and technology, and the production cost is high.
Precipitation method:
The precipitation method is to add an appropriate amount of precipitating agent to the solution containing tungsten ions to precipitate and produce tungsten oxide precipitates. This technique has the benefits of a simple operation and affordable costs, but the product purity is low and needs to be washed and refined several times.

Applications of Tungsten Oxide WO3 Powder:

Tungsten trioxide has many uses in daily life. It is often used in industry to manufacture X-ray phosphors, fireproof fabrics, and gas sensors. Due to its rich yellow color, WO3 can also be used as a pigment for ceramics and paints.

1. Tungsten trioxide is mainly used for calcining reduction to produce tungsten powder and tungsten carbide powder and then used for producing cemented carbide products, such as manufacturing tools and molds.

2. Tungsten trioxide can also be used to manufacture pure tungsten products, tungsten bars, tungsten wires, tungsten electrodes;

3. In industrial production, a small amount of tungsten trioxide is also used as a colorant for yellow ceramics.

4. In the shipbuilding industry, tungsten oxide of tungsten is used as an important anticorrosive paint and coating material.

5. Recently, tungsten dioxide has been used to produce electrochromic or smart windows. These windows are electrically switchable glass, and the light transmission properties can be changed by applying a voltage. This allows users to tint their windows, thereby changing the heat or light passing through.

6. X-ray screen, fireproof textile, the colorant and analysis reagent of chinaware, etc.

7. Tungsten trioxide can be used as a weight and radiation-shielding material.

8.WO3 has also been under extensive research because of its importance for its electro-optical, electrochromic, ferroelectric catalytic, etc.

9. Radiation shielding material and the producing metal tungsten material.
