What is Molecular Sieves 4A ?

4A molecular sieve is a synthetic crystal material with good adsorption and ion exchange properties. It belongs to a class of substances known as "molecular sieves" that screen and purify different molecules in gases or liquids primarily through their unique pore size and ion exchange capabilities. 4A molecular sieve, named for its pore size of 4 angstroms (1 angstroms =10^-10 meters), is widely used in industry and daily life.
The main structure of the 4A molecular sieve is composed of silicate mineral crystals, and its basic unit is tetraethyl silicate. A crystal structure with a specific aperture and shape can be formed by controlling the synthesis conditions. The crystal structure of the 4A molecular sieve is mainly composed of silica tetrahedron and aluminum oxide tetrahedron, in which the outer surface of silica tetrahedron is the negative charge center. In contrast, the outer surface of aluminum oxide tetrahedron is the positive charge center. This special structure makes 4A molecular sieves have high ion exchangeability and adsorption performance.
4A molecular sieves have a pore size of 4 ranges. They can effectively adsorb small molecules such as water, carbon dioxide, methane, and ammonia while allowing larger molecules such as nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen to pass through. Therefore, the molecular sieve 4A is frequently used in the purification and drying of natural gas, synthetic gas, and other gases and the separation and purification process in petrochemical, fertilizer, aerospace, and other fields.
In addition, the 4A molecular sieve also has good ion exchange performance. It can exchange the cations in the solution (such as sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, etc.) into hydrogen ions to prepare a certain concentration of hydrogen ion solutions. This hydrogen ion solution can be used to adjust the pH value of aqueous solutions and prepare some other chemical reaction media.

Gas drying and purification: 4A molecular sieves can effectively adsorb water, carbon dioxide, methane, ammonia, and other small molecules while allowing larger molecules such as nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, etc. Therefore, it is widely used in the drying and purification of natural gas, syngas, and other gases to remove the water and acid gas and improve the purity and dryness of the gas.
Liquid separation and purification: 4A molecular sieves can be used for liquid separation and purification, including petrochemical, fertilizer, aerospace, and other fields. For example, a 4A molecular sieve in the petrochemical industry can separate and purify various alkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, and other organic compounds. In aerospace, it can be used to purify fuels, lubricants, etc.

Productions Method of Molecular Sieves 4A:

Silica-aluminum exchange method: This method is prepared by reacting sodium silicate and aluminum hydroxide through crystallization, filtration, drying, and other steps. The benefits of this method are that the raw materials are simple to acquire, production costs are low, and industrial large-scale production can be achieved. However, the pureness of the product derived through this method is not high, and post-processing is required to achieve a higher purity.

The synthesis method involves the reaction between sodium silicate and sodium hydroxylide, adding sodium aluminate and other additives, and adjusting the pH value, temperature, and other parameters through crystallization, filtration, drying, and other steps. The result of this method is high purity and exceptional performance, but the production cost is high, and more additives are needed.

Natural mineral method: This method is prepared by purifying, crushing, high-temperature roasting, and raw mineral materials such as natural diatomite. The advantages of this method are that the raw materials are easy to obtain, the production cost is low, and the obtained products have the advantages of natural mineral structure. However, the purity and performance of the product are limited by the quality of raw materials, and it is not easy to get high-performance products.

Composite molecular sieve method: This method prepares a composite molecular sieve with specific structures and properties by reacting sodium silicaluminate and different additives. The product obtained by this method has better adsorption and ion exchange properties, but the production cost is high, and the technology is difficult.
