Molybdenum disulfide is the main component of molybdenum ore. It is a lead gray to black solid powder. It has a slippery feel and is odorless. It belongs to hexagonal or orthorhombic, similar to graphite and has metallic luster.
Molybdenum disulfide is a very important solid lubricant used in the automotive industry (fixers and components), aerospace (vacuum radiation lubrication), industrial machinery (general lubrication), composites industry (parts preparation), metallurgy Industrial (powder lubrication), etc. It is also used as an additive for various lubricants, a molybdenum compound, a catalytic hydrogenation desulfurization catalyst, a gas storage material, a photovoltaic material, and the like.

Application of molybdenum disulfide

MoS₂ is widely used in optoelectronic materials, composite materials, bioanalysis, medical fields, catalysts, carbon industry, machinery manufacturing and engineering plastics due to its unique and excellent mechanical, physical and chemical properties. Molybdenum disulfide has excellent lubricating properties under high temperature, low temperature, high load, high speed and ultra-vacuum conditions. As a very important solid lubricant, it is especially suitable for working environment under high temperature and high pressure. In particular, the general layered structure MoS₂, nanoparticle, which has excellent performance in wear resistance and loss, has become the core content of relevant experts.

Molybdenum disulfide as a lubricating medium additive

Since MoS₂ has a very special spherical structure, it can be rolled and dispersed in the lubricating medium, so it is often used as a lubricating additive for large-scale applications. Jin Yufu and other Sichuan injected molybdenum disulfide lubricant into the lubricating oil, and the lubrication level of the base oil were greatly improved. While ensuring the continuous and stable operation of each equipment, there are also the effects of energy saving and emission reduction.

Hu Kunhong et al. examined the tribological properties of different morphology MoS₂ particles. At low load and low speed, hollow spherical MoS₂ (hollow sphere) and flake nano-MoS₂ (nanosheet) can improve the antifriction and antiwear properties of the base oil. Under high load and high speed, the hollow sphere still maintains good antifriction and antiwear performance. The conclusion is that it is different from the conventional MoS₂, and its performance in extreme pressure and lubrication loss has better performance.

Ge Rongxi et al., in view of the large number of strains of the axles in the press-fit process of a certain type of machine wheel, through the practice of the field, proposed to use molybdenum disulfide lubricant as the wheel-fit press-fit lubrication medium, completely solving the problem of abnormal axle pull. It has been proved by experiments that the nano-MoS₂ material has excellent lubricating properties.

Preparation of wear-resistant composite material by molybdenum disulfide nano-material

For resin-based wear-resistant composite materials, its use in friction is extremely broad. As a result, the development of MoS₂ has brought about a broader development potential for such materials. Wang Jun and others used rubber-plastic composite materials as the matrix to add nano-MoS₂ and ordinary molybdenum disulfide to the matrix material to develop a class of water-lubricated rubber-plastic composite tail bearing materials: through the use of such materials and various loads and speeds. The friction and wear properties were tested. The test results show that under the same load, the friction coefficient of the composite decreases gradually with the increase of the rotational speed and finally maintains a stable state. Under the condition of consistent speed, the friction coefficient of such raw materials decreases when the load increases: composite The friction coefficient of the material decreases first and then increases with the increase of the amount of molybdenum disulfide added, and in the friction factor, such materials are lower than the general composite materials; MoS₂ molybdenum improves the performance of the material in this respect.

Application
Molybdenum sulfide is used in aerospace, automotive, machinery, and electronic communications, and is a good solid lubricant. Excellent lubricity for equipment under high temperature, low temperature, high load, high speed, chemical corrosion and modern ultra-vacuum conditions. Powder lubrication is mainly used for metal wire drawing, internal coating of weapons and the like. The plate is lubricated by organic blending to create a lubrication plate or block for translational and rolling lubrication of large equipment. It is added to lubricating oil, grease, Teflon, nylon, paraffin, stearic acid to improve lubrication and reduce friction, extend lubrication cycle, reduce cost and improve working conditions. The preparation of anti-corrosion materials provides a new market for molybdenum disulfide. For the stability of anaerobic acid, it provides anti-corrosion protection for pipelines and towers in petroleum and chemical industries through film-forming and spraying technology. Molybdenum disulfide does not adsorb dirt in a dusty environment, and does not contaminate products in textile, food and other production. The solid lubricating material made of it has the characteristics of similar dynamic and static friction coefficients, and the operation is stable without sticking or slipping. It can also be used as a non-ferrous metal release agent and a forged film lubricant.

The high-purity molybdenum disulfide produced by chemical synthesis has larger specific surface area, stronger adsorption capacity and higher reactivity, especially catalytic hydrogenation desulfurization performance. It is used to prepare high-efficiency hydrogenation desulfurization catalyst and gas storage material for petrochemical industry; the energy band of the thin layer of molybdenum disulfide is close to 1.78 eV, which matches the energy of light, and has a promising prospect in photovoltaic materials. As the particle size of molybdenum disulfide becomes smaller, the adhesion and coverage on the surface of the friction material are significantly improved. Anti-wear and anti-friction performances are doubled.
