Why Tungsten Disulfide Can Lubricate?

What is tungsten disulfide?
Tungsten disulfide is a fine grey crystal or powder with a metallic lustre, belongs to a hexagonal crystal system, and has semiconductor properties and diamagnetism. The natural mineral is wolframite with a layered structure, which is easy to dissociate and has a lubricating property similar to that of graphite. It is used as a lubricant, such as for aerosols. It is a dark grey powder and appears as wolframite in nature, and It is a dark grey rhombic crystalline solid with a relative density of 7.510. It is slightly soluble in cold water, soluble in hot water, insoluble in hydrochloric acid and alkali (except the mixture of concentrated nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid), soluble in molten alkali, and insoluble in alcohol. It has a density of 7.6g · cm-3. It is reducible and can react with hot, concentrated sulfuric acid, nitric acid, aqua regia and other strong oxidants. It can be converted into WO when heated in air or oxygen. 3. It can be decomposed into tungsten and sulfur when heated to 1250 in a vacuum. In the dry pure nitrogen gas flow, the tungsten trisulfide and sulfur mixture are heated to 900 to sublimate the excess sulfur, and the residue is tungsten disulfide.

Preparation method of tungsten disulfide
First calcination decomposition method: tungstic acid reacts with ammonia at 57~60 for three h, then naturally settles for more than 16h after heat preservation. Ammonium tungstate reacts with hydrogen sulfide gas to generate ammonium tetrathiotungstate, which is calcined at high temperatures and decomposed into tungsten disulfide. Second, tungsten reacts very slowly with liquid sulfur. Tungsten can form WS2 when mixed with stoichiometric sulfur in red hot tungsten through sulfur vapour and reacts for 24h at 800 in a nitrogen atmosphere to form WS2. For example, when it reacts at 6MPa and 1800 , an Orthogonal crystal form WS2 can be created. Third, ammonium tetrathiotungstate is used as raw material to decompose ammonium tetrathiotungstate by heating under the condition of isolating air. During heating, the temperature gradient is 100~200 /hour from room temperature to 700~1200 . After being kept at this temperature for 24~48 hours, the temperature gradient is 30~110 /hour to room temperature, and then the material is discharged and crushed. The preparation method of superfine scale crystal tungsten disulfide for lubricant has the advantages of simple process and equipment, no pollution to the environment, safe and reliable operation, stable quality, high purity and superfine tungsten disulfide with the hexagonal crystal structure.
Use of tungsten disulfide
It can be used as a lubricant with better performance than molybdenum disulfide, lower friction coefficient and higher compressive strength. It can be used alone for equipment running in high temperature, high pressure, high speed, high load and chemical active medium. Forging and stamping lubricant configured with other materials can extend the life of the die and improve the product finish.
