What is molybdenum silicide?

What is molybdenum disilicide?
Molybdenum Disilicide is a molybdenum silicon compound, also known as molybdenum silicide, having a molecular formula of MoSi2 and a molecular weight of 154.13. Besides, Molybdenum disilicide (MoSi2) is a promising and high temperature structural material because of its unique properties, such as high melting point (2030 °C), excellent oxidation resistance, relatively low density, good thermal and electrical conductivity.

The relevant properties of molybedium disilicide.
MoSi2 is a mesophase with the highest silicon content in the Mo-Si binary alloy system, and is a component-doped Dalton-type intermetallic compound.
With the dual characteristics of metal and ceramic, it is a high-temperature material with excellent performance. Very good high temperature oxidation resistance, oxidation temperature up to 1600 °C, comparable to SiC; moderate density (6.24g/cm3); lower coefficient of thermal expansion (8.1×10-6K-1); good electrothermal conduction Properties; ceramic brittleness below the higher brittle-ductile transition temperature (1000 ° C). It is metal-like soft plasticity above 1000 °C. MoSi is mainly used as heating elements, integrated circuits, high temperature oxidation resistant coatings and high temperature structural materials. In MoSi2, molybdenum and silicon are bonded by a metal bond, and silicon and silicon are covalently bonded, and molybdenum disilide is a gray tetragonal crystal. It is insoluble in common mineral acids (including aqua regia), but it is soluble in mixed acid of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid. It has good high temperature oxidation resistance and can be used as a heating element for working in high temperature (<1700 °C) oxidizing atmosphere. In an oxidizing atmosphere, a protective film layer is formed on the surface of a high-temperature combustion dense quartz glass (SiO2) to prevent continuous oxidation of molybdenum disilicide. When the temperature of the heating element is higher than 1700 ° C, a protective film of SiO 2 is formed, fused at a melting point of 1710 ° C, and SiO 2 is fused to form a molten droplet. Due to the action of its surface extension, it loses its protective ability. Under the action of the oxidizing agent, when the elements are continuously used, the form of the protective film is formed again. It should be noted that this element cannot be used for a temperature of 400-700 ° C for a long time due to strong oxidation at a low temperature.

The application of molybdenum disilicide are as follows.
In high-temperature anti-oxidation coating materials, electric heating elements, integrated electrode films, structural materials, reinforcing materials for composite materials, wear-resistant materials, connecting materials for structural ceramics, etc., molybdenum disilicide is distributed in the following industries:
1) Energy chemical industry: electric heating element, high temperature heat exchanger of atomic reactor unit, gas burner, high temperature thermocouple and its protective tube, smelting vessel  (for melting sodium, lithium, lead, antimony, tin and other metals).
2) Microelectronics industry: MoSi2 and other refractory metal silicides Ti5Si3, WSi2, TaSi2, etc., are important candidates for large-scale integrated circuit gate and interconnect film.
3) Aerospace industry: It has been widely and deeply researched and applied as a high temperature oxidation resistant coating material, especially as a component of turbine engine components such as blades, impellers, burners, tailpipes and seals.
4) Automotive industry: Turbocharger rotors for automotive engines, valve body, spark plugs and engine components.

What's the uses of molybdenum disilicide heater?
Molybdenum disilicide mosi2 heaters is an intermetallic compound. It has moderate density, melting point 2030 °C, and is electrically conductive. Silcarb, having established itself as a quality supplier of Silicon Carbide Heating Elements have now introduced its state-of-the-art technology Furnaces for various applications.
